I see teaching and research as complementary endeavors, and I wish that the economics of higher education did not make us feel as if former were pitted against the latter. Teaching constitutes the innermost ring of public outreach and intellectual work; there are many ways to do it well besides the modes I prefer. I do believe that a diversity in teaching and research approaches marks a healthy intellectual environment, and attempts by institutional assessors or industry regulators to gear teaching towards a narrow range of methods can be troubling.
